Married At First Sight Groom Removed From 2027 Series Following On-Set Incident

A participant in the upcoming 2027 season of "Married At First Sight" has been removed from the show halfway through filming following an alleged off-camera incident. The departure, which occurred abruptly, has left his on-screen partner unexpectedly out of the experiment and stunned the remaining cast.

A production insider stated that the groom was present one day and gone the next, with no formal farewell or opportunity for him or his partner to withdraw at a commitment ceremony. The exact circumstances surrounding the removal have not been disclosed, but there is no indication that it was related to alcohol or a positive drug test.

This incident occurs as the show's production company, Endemol Shine Australia, and Channel Nine implement stricter rules aimed at curbing off-camera behavior. Recent changes include limiting participants to one alcoholic drink at dinner parties and prohibiting some couples from keeping alcohol in their Sydney apartments, following concerns about arguments continuing after filming concludes. These restrictions are reportedly tailored to individual participant behavior rather than being uniformly applied.

The show previously introduced weekly drug testing for the 2026 season after contestants reportedly broke curfew, leading to disruptive behavior. A zero-tolerance policy is reportedly being maintained for the 2027 series, with warnings that serious rule breaches can lead to immediate removal.

The groom's bride was reportedly devastated by the decision, which ended her participation in the experiment despite no wrongdoing on her part. Her storyline now faces an uncertain future, with editors expected to significantly shorten her screen time, retaining only footage necessary to explain the departure. While the couple's wedding, honeymoon, and early ceremonies were filmed, their narrative arc is likely to be drastically reduced.

This is not the first time a participant has been removed during production. In the previous season, finance broker Micah Lomu was dropped after an internal investigation into an alleged incident, a claim he denied. His on-screen partner, Ankita Karungalekar, was also informed she was no longer required on set.

The changes to alcohol consumption rules follow a formal complaint from a 2026 participant, who alleged she was too intoxicated to be filmed at a dinner party and accused producers of failing their duty of care. Production rejected the complaint, stating that appropriate safeguards were in place.

These controversies appear to have prompted a significant reevaluation of alcohol monitoring during filming. While the current groom's removal is not linked to alcohol or drugs, it underscores the production's firm stance on enforcing experiment rules. "They are taking absolutely no chances this year," a source commented. "The message to the cast is clear: follow the rules or risk being sent home."

The 2027 season will also feature a changed expert panel following the death of Mel Schilling. The first three commitment ceremonies were filmed with only relationship experts John Aiken and Alessandra Rampolla. The role of relationship coach Brigitte Zonta, also known as Dr Lurve, in the upcoming season remains unconfirmed.

"Married At First Sight" is scheduled to return to Channel Nine in February 2027.
