Jodie Foster the Python Receives Groundbreaking Human Cancer Therapy at Chester Zoo

A 15-foot reticulated python named Jodie Foster has become the first snake in the world to undergo electrochemotherapy, a cancer treatment typically used on humans. The procedure, performed at Chester Zoo, targeted a fibrosarcoma tumor on her jawbone.
Vets initially removed the tumor in 2024, but it returned last year and began to affect her jawbone, making it increasingly difficult for her to eat. Facing the possibility of losing the 23-year-old reptile, the zoo collaborated with cancer specialists to adapt the electrochemotherapy technique for a snake.
The 90-minute procedure required two operating tables to be joined, creating a space the size of a double bed to accommodate Jodie Foster. Following the removal of the tumor and part of her jawbone, electrochemotherapy was administered to target any remaining cancerous cells. This treatment combines a chemotherapy drug with controlled electrical pulses to make cancer cells more permeable, allowing the drug to enter more effectively.
According to Dr. Ian Ashpole, a vet at Chester Zoo, the snake has recovered remarkably well and is back to her 'bright and feisty self.' A recent check indicated no signs of the cancer returning, and Jodie Foster is now eating normally and exploring her habitat.
Jodie Foster, who has lived at Chester Zoo for 20 years, was named by keepers who noticed the initials 'JF' on her paperwork, which stood for 'juvenile female.' They later decided it suited the name of the Oscar-winning actress.
Jose Alvarez Picornell from the University of Liverpool's Department of Small Animal Clinical Science noted that the success of the treatment highlights the value of collaboration. Details of the procedure will be formally published to aid the wider veterinary community.
Despite losing a portion of her jawbone, Jodie Foster's flexible jaw structure, characteristic of reticulated pythons, allows her to continue swallowing prey whole without difficulty. Reticulated pythons are native to South and Southeast Asia.
