Jason Segel Discusses Return to Rom-Com Roots in 'Shrinking' Season 4

Jason Segel, known for his roles in romantic comedies and the acclaimed series 'Shrinking,' is embracing a return to his rom-com origins in the upcoming fourth season of the Apple TV+ show. The actor, who has taken a break from the genre since hits like 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall,' feels the time jump in 'Shrinking' offers a fresh perspective on dating in middle age.

"I just think that somebody trying to date again at 45 with kids and with life experience and with tragedy in their past, it’s all a bit clumsy and new," Segel told Decider at Televerse 2026 in Los Angeles. He elaborated on how the genre has evolved, noting that older characters' romantic struggles are less about overcoming fear of romance and more about confronting internal challenges.

"I think that what you get to do at this age is, it’s not about a guy who’s afraid of girl, it’s a guy is afraid of himself, you know? And so exploring that in a dating realm, I think, is just a really It’s an interesting thing," he explained.

'Shrinking' Season 3 concluded with Harrison Ford's character, Paul, encouraging Jimmy (Segel) to re-enter the dating scene. While details about Jimmy's romantic entanglements in Season 4 remain scarce, series creator Bill Lawrence has confirmed the return of Cobie Smulders as Sofi and Michael J. Fox in an unspecified role. Additionally, Karen Gillan and Christian Slater are set to join the cast for the new season, with speculation suggesting Gillan might play a love interest for Segel's character.

Segel also discussed his performance in Season 3, particularly Jimmy's journey through grief and self-forgiveness after the loss of his wife. He highlighted key moments, including Jimmy's admission of failure as a parent and his later vulnerability about his fears of moving forward. "And so getting to do that scene with Paul, I was like, ‘This is the last thing he has to say before he can try again,’" Segel said of a pivotal scene.

He emphasized his interest in a character's unspoken feelings, referring to it as the "dirty underneath" that drives their actions. The nature of what will hold Jimmy back in Season 4 is something viewers will discover when the season premieres in 2027. Seasons 1-3 of 'Shrinking' are currently available on Apple TV+.
