iPhone Duo Faces New 'Gapgate' Issue Amidst Pre-Existing Screen Problems
Early buyers of Apple's foldable device are reporting a visible gap near the hinge, adding to concerns following recent 'Crackgate' screen issues.

Just days after its release, Apple's foldable iPhone Duo is encountering further scrutiny as early adopters report a new defect dubbed 'Gapgate.' A user on Reddit, identified as @MICAPe9, shared a video highlighting a visible gap between the device's back panel and its hinge. This discovery has prompted other iPhone Duo owners to inspect their devices, with many confirming similar gaps.
In the video, @MICAPe9 demonstrates the gap by shining a light along the side of the phone, revealing a space between the back casing and the hinge mechanism. Subsequent comments from other users suggest this gap is large enough to accommodate debris like crumbs. One user noted, "Mine does when I use a flash light. It looks ok without the light but… damn." Another expressed disappointment, stating, "I just checked right now and you can see both sides right through, smh most disappointing release on Apple's end."
The emergence of 'Gapgate' follows closely on the heels of 'Crackgate,' a problem where numerous users reported cracks appearing on the inner foldable screen. These cracks often manifested along the central crease or as lines of dead pixels shortly after purchase, sometimes within hours of receiving the device. Reports described a "pop" sound preceding the screen breakage, with some users experiencing the issue after only a handful of folds.
Apple has acknowledged the screen cracking issue, stating it affects a "small number" of iPhone Duos and advising affected customers to contact the company for a replacement. The company has not yet commented on the newly reported gap issue. The timing of these emerging problems is causing hesitation among potential buyers, with some reconsidering their pre-orders due to concerns about the device's durability and the proximity to Apple Stores for potential repairs.
The iPhone Duo, priced between £1,999 and £3,199, features a 7.6-inch inner folding display and a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Its specifications include storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB, and it is available in Star White and Night Sky colors. The device measures 11.3mm when folded and 5.2mm when unfolded, weighing 254g.
