Hollywood Stars Embrace 'Ghost Lashes' Trend, Ditching Mascara for Youthful Look
A-listers are opting for a natural aesthetic, but beauty experts caution that the trend isn't universally flattering and can sometimes age wearers.
A growing number of Hollywood actresses are embracing a minimalist approach to eye makeup, foregoing mascara in favor of a more natural look often dubbed 'ghost lashes.' This trend, exemplified by stars like Zendaya, Pamela Anderson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep, and Uma Thurman, signals a shift away from heavy eye makeup toward a fresher, more youthful appearance.
At the July 15 premiere of 'The Odyssey,' Zendaya was noted for her au naturel look, appearing to skip eye makeup entirely. This minimalist aesthetic has been adopted by other prominent figures, with Pamela Anderson notably appearing makeup-free at Paris Fashion Week in 2023 and continuing this natural look. Gwyneth Paltrow, known for her wellness-focused lifestyle, also aligns with this trend, showcasing glowing skin and minimal makeup. Meryl Streep, throughout her career, has favored an effortlessly elegant style, and more recently, has opted for pared-back looks, including minimal eye makeup.
Beauty expert William Grande suggests that the reliance on mascara for a more youthful appearance is being re-evaluated. "Mascara isn't dead, we're just finally realising it isn't always the secret to looking younger," Grande stated. "For years, we've been told more mascara equals bigger, younger-looking eyes, but that's not always true. Sometimes, it can actually age you, so removing it can make you look fresher."
Grande notes that for some, like Pamela Anderson, ditching mascara enhances their features by drawing attention to healthy skin rather than dramatic lashes. He believes this approach conveys confidence, which he calls "one of the biggest beauty tricks there is." For Paltrow, the no-mascara look is "completely on-brand" with her "effortless California glow" philosophy, making her appear "softer, more relaxed and arguably younger."
However, the effectiveness of the mascara-free look is not universal. Grande points out that while Meryl Streep's pared-back approach offers a "lovely softness that feels authentic," he personally feels a "little mascara still helps frame her eyes beautifully, especially for photographs and red carpets." Similarly, for Uma Thurman, whose striking bone structure can stand on its own, the no-mascara look works well, making her appear "effortlessly chic" as heavy eye makeup might distract from her features.
Drew Barrymore, a figure known for experimenting with various makeup styles, has also transitioned to a more natural aesthetic in her 50s. While Grande acknowledges that both heavy and minimal makeup have their place depending on the occasion, he emphasizes that "the biggest beauty myth is that more makeup automatically makes you look younger. The opposite can actually be true." He elaborates that "heavy mascara, thick liner and dramatic lashes can sometimes make the eyes look harsher, whereas softer definition and glowing skin create a fresher, more youthful appearance."
Ultimately, Grande posits that "confidence is the new mascara. Healthy skin, brushed-up brows and a glowing complexion will always make more of a statement than piling on product."
