Hidden iPhone Keyboard Shortcuts Can Enhance Typing and Texting
Apple's iPhone offers several built-in features that can speed up typing and editing text messages and emails.
Many iPhone users rely on their smartphones for extensive texting, emailing, and social media posting. While typing is the primary method of text entry, Apple offers several hidden keyboard shortcuts that can increase efficiency and ease of use. These features, often overlooked due to their placement in lengthy instructions or promotion via social media, can significantly improve the user's texting and typing experience.
One such feature is Quickpath, which allows users to type by sliding their finger across the virtual keyboard instead of tapping individual keys. To enable this, users can navigate to Settings > General > Keyboard and toggle on "Slide to Type." To use Quickpath, users touch the first letter of a word and then slide their finger to the subsequent letters, lifting the finger when the word is complete. A notable benefit of this method is that a single swipe on the delete key will erase the entire word, rather than just a single character.
Cursor Control and Text Selection
For editing text, particularly when a word or phrase needs to be inserted or modified within an existing sentence or paragraph, iPhone's trackpad-like cursor control is invaluable. By holding down the space bar, the keyboard transforms into a trackpad, allowing users to move the cursor precisely by sliding their finger across the screen. This feature is available in most text fields, including emails and messaging apps.
Selecting text for copying and pasting can also be streamlined. A double-tap on a word highlights it, while a triple-tap selects an entire paragraph. For more granular control, the trackpad method offers enhanced precision. After activating the trackpad by holding the space bar, users can tap anywhere on the keyboard to begin selecting text by moving their finger.
While the space bar trackpad works for selecting and deselecting text in applications like the Notes app and when composing emails, its functionality can be limited in certain chat applications such as iMessage or WhatsApp. In these cases, a workaround involves holding down the Shift key simultaneously with the space bar to enable text selection.
Copying and pasting can be accomplished through the on-screen pop-up menus, or by using three-finger gestures. A three-finger pinch gesture can be used to copy highlighted text, and the reverse gesture, a three-finger spread, pastes the content. This gesture-based copy and paste functionality can also be applied to images.
It is worth noting that the effectiveness of some of these shortcuts may vary depending on the specific iPhone model and the application being used. Some users may find these features work more smoothly on larger screens, such as those on an iPad.
