Harry Houdini Revived by AI in New Fox Nation Series
The legendary escape artist reappears 100 years after his death in 'Houdini: Back from the Dead,' utilizing AI to recount his life.
The legendary escape artist Harry Houdini is making a posthumous return, 100 years after his death on Halloween. A new three-part series on Fox Nation, titled "Houdini: Back from the Dead," uses artificial intelligence to bring the illusionist back to life for a modern-day interview.
The series, which premiered on October 14, aims to recount untold stories, personal struggles, and death-defying feats from Houdini's life. According to Lauren Petterson, president of Fox Nation, the platform is using emerging technology to present a historical figure in a new way. "We're proud to showcase a new form of historical storytelling that allows viewers to experience Houdini's remarkable life in his own words, while remaining rooted in extensive research and historical accuracy," Petterson stated.
The AI-generated Houdini, along with AI recreations of those close to him including his wife Bess, mother, brother, and friends, will narrate his career and most daring acts. The series draws on over 400 historical photographs and archival footage to create historically accurate visuals, with actors providing the movements and mannerisms that AI then transformed.
In promotional material, the AI Houdini teases his return: "I've escaped handcuffs, straightjackets, prisons, even being buried alive. But eventually one thing caught me: death. Until now." He adds, "The world called me the greatest escape artist who ever lived. Now, watch my last performance. On the 100th anniversary of my passing, I'll do the impossible. No stage, no locks, no hidden keys. Just me, returned from the grave to tell you my story."
"Houdini: Back from the Dead" will explore lesser-known aspects of the magician's life, such as a childhood accident that resulted in a gunshot wound to his hand, a fabricated rivalry with his brother, and a perilous attempt to escape from a sealed coffin. The series also touches upon his complicated marriage, his brief career as an aviator, and his public campaign against fraudulent spiritualist mediums, a pursuit that led to threats against his life.
