Gurus and seekers turn to AI chatbots for spiritual guidance

An increasing number of spiritual seekers are turning to artificial intelligence chatbots for guidance, seeking accessible and non-judgmental answers to personal and existential questions. This trend sees traditional gurus and spiritual leaders exploring AI to meet the evolving needs of those looking for spiritual support.

AI chatbots, powered by large language models trained on vast amounts of text, including sacred scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita, offer users 24/7 access to information and advice. This unfettered availability contrasts with the often limited time and sometimes costly services of human gurus, who are considered essential in traditions like Hinduism for achieving spiritual liberation.

Some prominent spiritual figures have launched their own AI-powered platforms. Jaggi Vasudev, known as Sadhguru, offers an app that answers questions using his teachings, while Deepak Chopra has an AI platform that draws from his extensive body of work. These initiatives allow users to interact with a digital representation of the guru's wisdom.

However, critics argue that AI cannot replicate the lived experience, ethical accountability, and nuanced wisdom of human spiritual leaders. Researchers note that AI models may tend to validate users' existing beliefs rather than challenging them in ways that foster genuine spiritual growth. Experts also point out that religious texts require community and contextual interpretation, which AI may not provide.

Vikas Sahu, founder of GitaGPT, describes his chatbot as an "AI spiritual companion" that makes the Bhagavad Gita's wisdom readily available. He states that the free chatbot helps those in distress by offering encouragement, a service he believes some human gurus may not provide as openly or affordably.

Religion professors express skepticism about AI's ability to fully replace human guidance. They highlight the importance of embodied presence, community, and the ability of a human teacher to engage in challenging dialogues, which are crucial for spiritual awakening and personal evolution. Some suggest that while AI can provide straightforward answers, it lacks the capacity for genuine spiritual depth and human connection.

Despite these reservations, some see AI as a valuable tool for spiritual exploration. Mindfulness instructors use AI as a "channeling" tool or a mirror to gain insights. The accessibility and perceived lack of judgment in AI chatbots appeal to individuals disillusioned with traditional religious institutions, partly due to past scandals involving human clergy. This has led to a perception of AI as potentially less biased.

In some cases, AI is being integrated into existing spiritual organizations. The Self-Realization Fellowship, for instance, views AI as a modern method to help people access the teachings of its founder, Paramahansa Yogananda. They are carefully developing AI tools to ensure accuracy and prevent fabricated responses, while still emphasizing that technology cannot replace the human element of spiritual discipleship.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to create more interactive spiritual experiences using AI. Companies are developing three-dimensional AI avatars and holograms of spiritual leaders, allowing for novel forms of engagement with devotees. Non-profit initiatives are also merging AI with spirituality, offering both live sessions with human gurus and AI-powered features for practical advice on spiritual concepts.
