The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) has ignited a discussion online, particularly among women who are voicing concerns about the game's optional romantic relationship features. Some players are considering the in-game interactions between human players and the character Lucia as a form of digital infidelity.
Reports suggest that GTA 6 will allow players to engage in romantic storylines with Lucia, the game's female protagonist. These interactions could include exchanging texts, going on dates, and developing a relationship. This feature has led to widespread debate on social media platforms, with some women vowing to prohibit their partners from playing the game.
Anuska Ikra, a 26-year-old legal analyst, gained significant social media traction for her view that "It’s cheating if he has a girlfriend in GTA 6." She explained that while normal gameplay is acceptable, romanticizing or sexualizing a virtual character to the detriment of a real-life relationship crosses a line. Ikra, however, stated she does not plan to ban her own partner from playing but has set a "PG-13" standard for his interactions within the game.
Shelby Haas, who is engaged, posted a viral video declaring, "In absolutely no human way is my fiancé playing GTA 6 after I just saw that you literally have to maintain a relationship with a girl in the video game, and text her — and she’ll get mad if you don’t text her back — and take her on dates and can have sex with her." Her fiancé, Alex Eubanks, stated on Instagram that he would forgo playing if it bothered his partner, acknowledging she had valid points.
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, addressed the relationship element, stating that it's an optional component for players interested in role-playing relationships. He noted that physical intimacy is a significant aspect of relationships, and the developers aimed to implement it thoughtfully. However, it remains unconfirmed whether direct sexual interactions with Lucia will be a feature in the game.
Conversely, some women on the internet argue against this interpretation. Kendall, a content creator, asserted on TikTok that "it’s a fictional f- -king video game, get [the f- -k] over it." She believes it becomes a problem only if a partner treats a video game character better than their real-life partner.
Becca, who is engaged, shared her experience with dating simulations, admitting to using modifications in games like Sims 4 that allowed romantic and sexual interactions with virtual characters. She clarified that her actions were for personal enjoyment and not an attempt to cheat on her partner.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game follows protagonists Lucia and Jason as they navigate a life of crime in Vice City, with the narrative reportedly spanning around 80 hours of gameplay.
