Grand Theft Auto VI Leaks Emerge Ahead of Netflix Preview and Gamescom
Hacker group releases gameplay footage of the highly anticipated title, potentially impacting Rockstar Games and its parent company.
Gameplay footage and details from the highly anticipated "Grand Theft Auto VI" have been leaked online by a hacker group identifying as Cyberleek, days before an official preview event with Netflix and amidst the ongoing Gamescom conference in Germany. The leaks, which began appearing on Wednesday, include what appears to be a playable build of the game, with hackers even using in-game elements to display their group's name.
Rockstar Games, known for its secrecy surrounding major releases, has reportedly taken legal action in federal court to have the leaked clips removed and to identify the individuals responsible. The developer has not publicly commented on the breaches.
This incident occurs just weeks after Rockstar announced an "extended look" at "Grand Theft Auto VI" would be featured in a Netflix special scheduled for Thursday. "Grand Theft Auto VI" is Rockstar's first new title since 2018, and it is widely expected to be a significant commercial success. An industry expert previously told Forbes that the game could generate between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in its first week of release.
For comparison, its predecessor, "Grand Theft Auto V," achieved $1.15 billion in revenue within its first five days and has sold over 230 million copies, making it the best-selling premium game to date. While the leaks may diminish some of the surprise surrounding the game's reveal, experts suggest it is unlikely to significantly harm overall sales, as players are still expected to purchase the game upon its release in November.
The hacker group has reportedly cited the absence of a physical disc release for the upcoming game and other grievances as reasons for their actions. The leak also coincides with Gamescom, a major video game trade fair currently taking place in Germany.
Despite the leak, shares of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, experienced a decline following the news.
