Grand Theft Auto VI Fans Criticize 'Greedy' Pricing and Paywalls

Fans of the popular Grand Theft Auto video game series are voicing strong dissatisfaction with the pricing and content structure for the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, citing "greedy" practices and restrictive paywalls. Rockstar Games announced pre-order details last week for the game, set to release on November 19.

The standard edition of Grand Theft Auto VI is priced at $80, an increase from the typical industry standard of $70 for new AAA titles. Adding to the controversy, a significant amount of story content, including access to in-game stores, vehicles, customization options, and missions, is reportedly locked behind the $100 "ultimate edition" of the game.

Andrew Duran, a longtime fan and PC gamer who purchased a PlayStation specifically for the title's November release, criticized the move. "They clearly wanted to charge $100 for the game but were scared of the backlash," Duran stated. "There’s no other reason they would paywall a bunch of story content and shops throughout the in-game world."

Other gamers have echoed these sentiments, labeling Rockstar Games as "greedy." Some fans also expressed bewilderment, contrasting the current pricing with the release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, when a bundle including the game, a PlayStation 3, and headphones cost $300. This pricing strategy has raised concerns that it reflects a broader trend of rising costs in consumer goods, catering to customers with higher spending capacity.

Molly Taylor, a gaming reporter for PC Gamer, described the $80 version as a "Lite Edition" and called the pricing scheme "anti-consumer," expressing worry for the future of the video game industry.

Beyond the base price, pre-ordering the game before the November 19 release date includes a "free month" of GTA+, a premium online gaming membership. Gamers have identified this as a potential "trap," as the subscription automatically renews after the initial month.

Additionally, the "physical" version of the game will not include a disc but rather a code for a digital download. Despite these criticisms, pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI have reportedly been strong. A poll of over 10,000 gamers indicated that more than 80% plan to purchase the $100 edition. In the first 24 hours of pre-orders, the game is said to have surpassed 39 million pre-orders globally, generating over $3 billion in revenue and already recouping its estimated $2 billion budget, according to USA Today.
