Google Value Drops $500 Billion Amid AI Concerns

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, saw its market value decrease by approximately $500 billion following the release of its latest quarterly results, which revealed significant investments in artificial intelligence that are impacting its core advertising business and overall cash flow.

Despite a 25% year-over-year increase in total revenue to $127.6 billion, driven largely by Google Cloud's 103% revenue growth to nearly $31 billion, the company reported a 25% drop in profits. More concerning for investors, Alphabet experienced negative free cash flow exceeding $9 billion for the second time in its history as a public company, nearly doubling the loss from the previous quarter. This negative cash flow is primarily attributed to substantial spending on AI development.

The integration of AI summaries into Google's search engine, which now defaults to providing AI-generated answers to user queries, has directly affected the number of advertisements sold. As the sale of ads alongside search results constitutes the vast majority of Alphabet's revenue, this decline has raised concerns on Wall Street.

Tracy Woo, a principal analyst at Forrester, commented that Alphabet's performance highlights "the challenge of funding massive AI investments while maintaining the strength of established businesses." While Phillip Schindler, Google's chief business officer, expressed optimism about the AI-focused search engine's trajectory, the company's stock fell by nearly 13% on Thursday, reaching a six-month low.
