Google Unveils New Pixel Phones with Enhanced AI and Camera Features
The latest Pixel lineup features slimmer cameras with improved zoom, advanced AI tools, and doubled storage, aiming to attract new users and boost adoption of its AI services.
Google announced its newest generation of Pixel phones on Wednesday, highlighting advancements in camera technology with slimmer profiles and more powerful zoom capabilities, alongside significant enhancements in artificial intelligence features. The company aims to incentivize users to upgrade their devices and increase engagement with its AI offerings.
This latest iteration of Pixel phones introduces several new AI-driven software features, including the ability to extract photos from videos, an integrated teleprompter, enhanced video stabilization, and an improved speech-to-text function. While Pixel phones have not achieved the market dominance of Apple's iPhones, Google has consistently integrated more AI capabilities into its devices since 2023.
Google's new Pixel models will come with doubled storage capacity, starting at 256 gigabytes, and offer up to 30 hours of battery life with faster wireless charging. The company has discontinued the 128-gigabyte Pixel 11, which was previously its entry-level option priced at $800.
The Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, and Pixel 11 Pro XL are now available for pre-order in the U.S., with prices starting at $900, $1,100, and $1,300, respectively. The Pixel Pro Fold is priced starting at $1,900. These prices represent a $100 increase for each model compared to last year's offerings.
New features include live translation for videos, podcasts, and voice messages. For the Pro models, a feature called HiLight allows users to assign specific colors to favorite contacts, causing the phone to emit that color when the device is placed face down and the contact calls. This feature complements the existing "Flip to Shhh" function, which enables "do not disturb" mode by simply placing the phone face down.
To encourage adoption of its AI tools, Google is offering a free six-month subscription to its AI Pro plan with the purchase of the Pixel 11 Pro or Pixel 11 Pro XL models. This initiative aims to popularize Google's Gemini AI toolkit, developed to compete with platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Camera upgrades include a new mode named Magic Capture, which allows users to capture a series of photos and video with a single press of the shutter button. Google also stated that the cameras boast improved light sensitivity. For the Pro models, the Instant Night Sight feature enhances the ability to capture clear shots in low-light environments quickly, reducing the need to hold the phone steady for extended exposure periods.
In addition to the phones, Google has introduced its first tracking device, the Pixel Tag. Priced at $30 for a single unit or $100 for a four-pack, the Pixel Tag is compatible with devices running Android 9 or higher.
