Google Releases New AI-Powered Smart Speaker After Six-Year Hiatus

Google has launched its first new smart speaker in six years, the $100 Google Home Speaker, an upgrade to its Nest Audio line. This new device features enhanced integration with Google's Gemini AI, aiming to offer a more capable and conversational smart home experience.

The previous generation of Google's smart speakers had been in place for six years. The new Google Home Speaker is designed to be sleeker and more AI-powered, functioning with Gemini for Home to seamlessly control a smart home environment.

Setup for the new speaker is managed through the Google Home app and reportedly takes less than five minutes. Users can customize voice and privacy settings and integrate the device into existing Google Home setups. The speaker supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and Thread 1.3 connectivity.

Enhanced AI Capabilities

With Gemini integration, the Google Home Speaker is designed to go beyond basic commands. Users can ask it to set schedules, read calendars, engage in extended conversations, and even interrupt ongoing assistant responses. The speaker can also sync with other compatible smart devices. While some advanced features, such as reviewing camera history or receiving a daily "Home Brief," require a Google Home Premium subscription, the base model offers improved interaction with smart home appliances like coffee makers or security cameras.

Sound and Design

The Google Home Speaker features a 360-degree sound design with a 58mm full-range driver. For optimal audio performance, placement in an open area is recommended. Reviewers note that while the speaker can reach surprisingly loud volumes with clear bass and vocals, the sound can sometimes feel less dynamic compared to dedicated music speakers. The device measures 3.4 inches in height and 4.2 inches in diameter, weighing 0.9 pounds with its power cable.

Value Proposition

Priced at $100, the Google Home Speaker is considered a worthwhile upgrade for those invested in Google's smart home ecosystem. The enhanced AI capabilities provided by Gemini are highlighted as a significant improvement over previous generations, making the speaker more useful for everyday tasks and smart home management. While not primarily marketed for high-fidelity music playback, its ease of use and integration capabilities position it as a strong contender in the smart speaker market.
