Google Launches Universal Cart AI Shopping Tool
The new feature aims to consolidate products from various retailers, track prices, and identify savings opportunities.
Google has begun the U.S. rollout of Universal Cart, an artificial intelligence-powered shopping tool designed to aggregate products from different retailers into a single location. Launched on October 15, the feature also monitors prices, alerts users to restocks, and helps identify potential savings before checkout, aligning with the approaching holiday shopping season.
How Universal Cart Works
Google Universal Cart functions as a shopping hub accessible through Google Search and the Gemini app. It allows users to save items from various retailers encountered during searches or conversations with Gemini. Unlike traditional methods of managing multiple browser tabs or separate wish lists, Universal Cart keeps these saved products consolidated. For example, a user might save a coffee maker found on Google Search and later add a pair of sneakers discovered through a Gemini conversation. Both items will be available in the Universal Cart upon return.
The tool leverages Google's Shopping Graph, which contains over 60 billion continuously updated product listings, enabling it to track prices and availability for supported items. Google initially previewed this tool in May 2026.
Features for Savings and Convenience
Universal Cart offers several features intended to enhance the shopping experience and potentially reduce costs:
Unified Shopping List
By consolidating products from different online stores, the tool aims to simplify the process of tracking items, particularly for users shopping for multiple people or conducting extensive product research. Users can save items without immediate purchase commitment, keeping their options organized.
Price Drop and Restock Alerts
A key feature of Universal Cart is its ability to monitor saved products and notify users of price reductions or when an out-of-stock item becomes available again. This monitoring is presented as a convenience, especially during high-volume shopping periods like Black Friday and the holidays, though it does not guarantee the absolute lowest price.
Promo Codes and Card Rewards
Universal Cart's AI can identify relevant promotional codes and analyze associated benefits from users' linked payment cards via Google Wallet. This aims to help shoppers select the most advantageous payment method by considering credit card rewards and benefits, alongside surfacing available promo codes directly within the cart.
Streamlined Checkout
For participating retailers, Universal Cart aims to provide a more integrated checkout process. In some instances, purchases can be completed directly using Google Pay. Alternatively, the selected items can be transferred to the retailer's website for completion. Retailers such as Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, and Wayfair, along with many Shopify merchants, are listed as having simplified checkout experiences through this integration. However, the specific checkout options are retailer-dependent, and the merchant remains responsible for order fulfillment and customer service.
Availability and Future Integration
Google Universal Cart is currently rolling out to U.S. users, accessible via Google Search and the Gemini app. The company has indicated that the full functionality and availability may vary as the rollout progresses. Google has previously mentioned plans for integration with YouTube and Gmail, but no confirmed launch dates have been announced for these platforms.
Underlying Technology and Privacy Considerations
The functionality of Universal Cart is supported by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a technical standard designed to facilitate communication between AI shopping tools, retailers, and payment systems. This technology aims to bridge product discovery with the checkout process. Google's efforts in AI-powered shopping also include features like 'Let Google Call,' which uses AI to check product availability with local stores. Competitors like Amazon are also developing similar AI shopping tools.
Regarding privacy, Universal Cart utilizes Google Wallet to identify payment benefits. However, the company's launch announcement does not provide extensive details on data retention or specific usage for advertising purposes. Users are advised to review their Google account privacy settings and Google's privacy policies. The company suggests that users exercise caution, especially when making surprise purchases, and to continue practicing standard online shopping safety habits, including verifying seller legitimacy and checking final prices.
