Google AI Chief Jeff Dean Departs Amid Leadership Shake-up for New Startup

Google announced a significant overhaul of its artificial intelligence leadership Wednesday, a move that coincides with the departure of Jeff Dean, the company's chief scientist for nearly three decades. Dean is leaving to establish his own artificial intelligence startup, Discovery Loop, alongside three other Google veterans.

Demis Hassabis, currently the chief executive of Google DeepMind, will assume the new roles of chairman and chief scientist for Google's AI efforts. Koray Kavukcuoglu, technology chief at Google DeepMind, will lead the development of Google's upcoming Gemini 4 model, according to an announcement by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on the social platform X.

Pichai stated that Dean's departure is amicable, acknowledging his "incredible 27-year run" with the company. Alphabet, Google's parent company, plans to invest in Discovery Loop and provide the startup with cloud computing resources.

Dean's new venture, Discovery Loop, aims to automate scientific discovery, a process he described as currently slow and labor-intensive. Longtime Google researchers Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat are joining Dean to co-found the startup, which intends to scale discovery automation to aid fields such as drug discovery and the development of clean energy solutions.

This departure marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits from Google's technology leadership, occurring as the company strives to demonstrate the value of its substantial AI investments to investors. Competitors such as OpenAI with its ChatGPT and Anthropic with its Claude models are currently perceived to be leading the market for advanced chatbots.

Other notable departures include Noam Shazeer, a senior computer scientist and AI researcher, who recently moved to OpenAI, and John Jumper, recognized for his work on the AlphaFold AI model, who joined Anthropic.

In recent financial news, Alphabet reported its first quarterly cash flow deficit and projected capital expenditures of up to $205 billion for the full year. The company also did not provide an update on the release of its Gemini 3.5 Pro model. Shares of Alphabet saw a 4.2% decline on Wednesday, reflecting investor concerns about the company's competitive standing in the AI landscape.

"We are committed to being at the frontier, and are super focused on the areas where we need to improve," Pichai stated in his blog post. "I’m really excited for our upcoming model releases and the progress we’re seeing. We have to continue to move fast and with clear purpose here."

Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind before its acquisition by Google in 2014, will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, an AI drug discovery startup spun out from Google.

Discovery Loop's founding has attracted seed funding from Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, who are co-leading the investment round alongside Alphabet's contribution.
