Frequent Short Breaks May Combat Fatigue and Boost Productivity

Taking short, five-minute breaks to move can significantly reduce fatigue, improve mood, and enhance productivity, according to recent research. This strategy, dubbed a "movement snack" by its proponents, offers a manageable approach to counteracting the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

Researchers studied over 19,000 adults across various ages, professions, and work environments to understand the real-world impact of these short breaks. Participants were asked to incorporate five-minute walking breaks at intervals of 30, 60, or 120 minutes. These findings acknowledge the practical challenges individuals face in adhering to strict schedules, noting that "people have lives, they're working, there's pressure." The study emphasizes that even imperfect adherence to the break schedule can yield noticeable benefits.

Adults in developed countries often spend an average of 11 to 12 hours per day sitting, which constitutes a significant portion of their waking hours. The concept of the "movement snack" aims to provide an accessible antidote to this sedentary lifestyle. Unlike tightly controlled laboratory experiments where compliance can be easily monitored, this research focused on real-world application, recognizing the need for flexible and practical solutions.
