Ford Rehires Experienced Engineers After AI Tools Fall Short
Automaker recognizes the need for human expertise to train and improve artificial intelligence systems for quality control.
Ford has brought back experienced human engineers to address limitations in artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed to enhance production quality. The automaker found that AI systems, while powerful, require the deep knowledge and expertise of veteran employees to be effective.
Charles Poon, Ford's vice president of vehicle hardware engineering, stated that AI tools are only as effective as the data used to train them. He acknowledged that the company had previously underestimated the value of experienced engineers, assuming AI could independently produce high-quality products simply by ingesting design requirements. Many veteran technicians, whose knowledge could have been instrumental in refining these AI tools, had departed before their expertise could be leveraged.
To rectify this, Ford has hired approximately 300 veteran engineers for its vehicle engineering division in recent years. These engineers now function as internal auditors, conducting weekly design reviews to identify and eliminate potential failure points before production begins. This strategic shift has been central to Ford's efforts to improve production quality by proactively addressing process issues.
This focus on human expertise has coincided with a notable improvement in Ford's vehicle quality. The company topped the JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) for the first time since 2010. Additionally, several Ford models, including the F-150, Mustang, and Super Duty, ranked highest in their respective segments for the second consecutive year. The Escape, Explorer, Expedition, and Maverick also secured top-three rankings in their categories, indicating that seven of Ford's top ten models achieved this distinction.
Ford CEO Jim Farley has indicated that this approach is also positively impacting the company's financial performance. Reductions in warranty coverage and recall expenses are contributing to cost savings and boosting the automaker's overall financial health. Farley noted that the experienced engineers are now "at the heart" of the company’s strategy to improve production quality by identifying and resolving process issues early in the design phase.
