Fake Songs Appear on D4vd's Apple Music Page Amid Murder Charges
A song titled 'I Did It' briefly surfaced on the musician's profile while his pre-trial hearing continues.
A song titled "I Did It" reportedly appeared on musician D4vd's Apple Music page while he faces murder charges. The track surfaced as the singer's pre-trial hearing was ongoing. This incident highlights a vulnerability in music streaming service upload processes.
Exploiting a loophole in how audio files are submitted, bad actors can provide metadata for individual songs that allows them to use an existing artist's name, or one with a very similar spelling. Because the process is largely automated, these fake tracks often remain online until a rights-owner identifies them and alerts the platform. This issue is not isolated to D4vd's account.
Earlier this year, Sony Music reported requesting the removal of over 135,000 songs impersonating its artists on streaming platforms. Spotify also acknowledged the problem, stating it had removed more than 75 million "spammy tracks" in the 12 months prior to September. In response, Spotify launched a tool called Artist Profile Protection in March, enabling certain musicians to review new additions before they are published to their pages.
Despite these measures, another fake D4vd song, "Marcescence," was added to his Spotify profile on July 18 and remained live for eight hours before its removal. The incident involving "I Did It" on Apple Music occurred during a period of heightened legal scrutiny for the artist, who is facing a murder charge.
