Fairphone, a Dutch company known for its commitment to ethical and sustainable electronics, has launched its latest smartphone, the Gen 6+, in the United States. The company is making its devices available through a new American website, positioning itself as a more affordable and longer-lasting alternative to established players like Apple.

The Gen 6+ is priced at $650, significantly undercutting the starting price of Apple's iPhone 17 series, which begins at $799 for standard models and reaches $1,099 for Pro versions. Fairphone emphasizes its device's longevity, offering a five-year warranty and software support guaranteed until 2033. The phone boasts up to two days of battery life on a single charge, contrasting with the iPhone 17's typical one-day capacity.

A key differentiator for Fairphone is its modular design, which allows users to easily replace up to 12 components. These user-replaceable parts include the battery, display, cameras, USB-C port, and SIM tray. The company includes a Torx T5 screwdriver with each purchase to facilitate these repairs. This approach contrasts with many mainstream smartphones, which are often difficult or impossible for users to repair.

In terms of performance, the Fairphone Gen 6+ offers 12GB of RAM, higher than the Google Pixel 10a's 8GB. While the Pixel 10a, another mid-range Android option available in the U.S. for around $428, may have a faster chipset, Fairphone prioritizes user maintainability and a longer overall lifespan.

Fairphone currently holds a smaller market share compared to giants like Apple, which has a customer base of approximately 1.56 billion users globally. In its home country of the Netherlands, Fairphone has an estimated 45,000 to 50,000 active users, representing about 0.3% of the Dutch smartphone market. However, the company reports steady growth in its user base.

The expansion into the U.S. market has generated mixed reactions online. While many express excitement for the launch and the brand's ethos, some users who previously imported Fairphones have voiced concerns about slow security updates and support response times. The long-term success of Fairphone in the competitive U.S. market remains to be seen.
