Facial Anatomy May Influence Allergy Severity, New AI Offers Drug-Free Relief

New research indicates that the physical structure of a person's nasal passages and face shape could be a factor in allergy and congestion severity. A study involving users of the SONU Band, an FDA-cleared acoustic therapy device, found that individuals with anatomically deeper nasal cavities sought treatment for congestion significantly more often than those with shallower cavities.

The 2025 study, published in the International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology, tracked over 2,300 users and observed that the ratio of nasal cavity depth to height was notably associated with how frequently people sought relief for nasal congestion. The research was a collaboration between Harvard Medical School and SoundHealth, a med-tech company that utilizes artificial intelligence to develop allergy and congestion solutions.

SoundHealth's SONU Band aims to address nasal congestion through personalized acoustic resonance therapy. The device uses a smartphone camera to scan a user's face, applying machine learning to analyze facial geometry. This analysis helps generate estimations about the internal nasal passages, allowing the band to deliver customized sound waves.

These gentle sound waves vibrate the sinus and nasal cavities, with the intention of reducing inflammation and alleviating allergy and congestion symptoms. The SONU Band syncs with a companion app, enabling users to control and personalize their experience. This approach offers a drug-free alternative to traditional allergy medications and steroid sprays.

According to the brand, over 80% of SONU Band users have reported a clinically significant reduction in nasal congestion symptoms. Testimonials highlight its effectiveness, with one user stating, "I wanted natural relief and didn’t want to take allergy medications while being pregnant… Within two days I felt a huge difference in my breathing." The device is also reportedly recommended by medical professionals as a novel, drug-free option for those suffering from allergies and congestion. The SONU Band is designed for individuals aged 12 and older, is portable, and retails for under $300. Customers are offered a 30-day risk-free trial period.
