Epic Games CEO Announces Major AI Pivot in Game Development
Fortnite maker Tim Sweeney confirms a strategic shift towards artificial intelligence, aiming to empower developers with new tools.
Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, is undertaking a significant strategic shift towards integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its video game development processes, according to CEO Tim Sweeney.
Sweeney announced the company's "huge pivot" on social media, stating that developers are being redirected to "retool for maximum AI acceleration." He clarified that the aim is not to reduce headcount but to equip developers with advanced tools to create "more" and "better stuff," which he described as "empowering" for creators.
The announcement follows a Bloomberg report indicating that Epic Games has delayed a collaboration with Disney, which was set to feature characters from Star Wars and Marvel. According to the report, developers were instructed to utilize AI tools to complete this project, with directives suggesting a move away from "hand-written code" towards generating game art through "full AI workflows."
While Sweeney did not publicly comment on the specifics of the Disney collaboration, his broader statements on X confirmed the company's increased focus on AI. He addressed potential criticisms, noting that the industry's desire to remain in a past state, such as 2016, is not feasible in the current landscape.
