Eight Sleep, a company known for its temperature-regulating mattress covers, has introduced a new feature that tracks users' biological age. This development, created in partnership with longevity advocate Bryan Johnson, aims to provide insights into how lifestyle choices impact the aging process. The feature is integrated into Eight Sleep's Pod system, which includes a mattress cover equipped with sensors.
Sleep Data and Aging Metrics
The Pod's mattress cover utilizes built-in sensors to monitor several key biometric indicators during sleep. These include heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, and sleep stages. This data is used to calculate biological age, which differs from chronological age, as it reflects the functional state of a person's cells, tissues, and organs. Factors influencing biological age include genetics, weight, environmental exposures, and lifestyle habits such as diet, exercise, and sleep quality.
Matteo Franceschetti, co-founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, stated that the system makes longevity data accessible through an effortless user experience. "You simply sleep in comfort while the Pod builds a continuous picture of how your body is functioning night after night," he explained.
To ensure accuracy, the sensors' measurements have been validated against clinical standards. For instance, the system's sleeping heart rate detection achieved 99% accuracy compared to an ECG, and respiratory rate was 98% accurate when compared to respiratory inductance plethysmography.
Franceschetti noted that the Biological Age feature was developed using data from over 100,000 participants and 2.7 million hours of sleep biometric data. The system also focuses on the "speed of aging," estimating the pace at which the body ages relative to calendar time.
Integrating Lifestyle and Health Insights
Users can optionally connect wearable fitness trackers, such as an Apple Watch, to incorporate data from daytime activities and medical records, creating a more comprehensive health profile. While the Pod system is not intended to replace professional medical care, Eight Sleep emphasizes the importance of consistency in tracking health changes over time.
"I think Eight Sleep customers will love the Biological Age because it can help them build intuition around how their lifestyle choices affect their health," Johnson said in a press release from Eight Sleep. Johnson, who has prioritized sleep as part of his longevity regimen, has used the Pod system for years.
The current Eight Sleep Pod system is priced at $2,999 and includes a five-year warranty. The company offers a 30-night risk-free trial, with free shipping and returns.
