Economists Warn of AI's Economic Disruption, Urge Immediate Action

Hundreds of economists and AI researchers are urging immediate action to address the potential economic upheaval caused by artificial intelligence, warning that the technology could lead to unprecedented societal transformation and significant job displacement.

An open letter released Monday, organized by Stanford University's digital economy lab, states that institutions "must act now" to prepare for AI's rapid advancement. The signatories, which include 16 Nobel laureates and prominent figures from institutions like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, emphasize that AI's power may increase dramatically in the next decade, potentially triggering economic changes on a scale comparable to the Industrial Revolution but unfolding over a much shorter period.

The letter asserts that this transformation presents both risks, such as widespread job losses, and opportunities for significant gains in living standards. To navigate this future, the signatories call for the development of incentives, guardrails, and institutions designed to guide AI in a way that complements human capabilities and benefits society as a whole.

Computer scientist and AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio, a professor at the University of Montreal and one of the letter's signatories, expressed concern about the current trajectory of AI development. He stated that it is "highly plausible" that AI will drastically alter economies. Bengio stressed the importance of making deliberate, democratic choices about AI's future rather than relying solely on market forces, which he cautioned could leave a majority of citizens behind.
