Duolingo Restores Child's Streak After Hospital Stay, Sparks Flood of User Requests
The language app's act of kindness leads to a barrage of humorous and sometimes outlandish pleas for streak recovery.
Duolingo reinstated a 10-year-old's language learning streak after the child lost it during a hospital stay, a gesture that quickly prompted a wave of similar requests from other users citing various reasons for missing their daily lessons.
A parent, posting on X under the username Sunny Chaos, initially reached out to the popular language-learning app on Tuesday. Their son had accumulated a streak of over 300 consecutive days of completing lessons before being hospitalized. A streak in Duolingo is maintained by completing at least one lesson daily.
"He’s home and recovering, but heartbroken about losing his streak. Any chance some Duo magic can restore it?" the parent wrote in a post that gained significant attention.
Duolingo's official X account responded positively, confirming the streak's restoration and adding bonus in-app perks. "301-day streak repaired! Threw in some gems and a Streak Shield too," the company stated, expressing gladness for the boy's recovery.
However, this act of goodwill seemingly opened the floodgates for other users. Duolingo's social media channels were soon inundated with requests for streak restorations, ranging from the mildly inconvenient to the absurd.
One user humorously pleaded, "Hi Mr Duolingo. I was hungover last Sunday and lost my four-day streak. Please help." Duolingo's reply to this request was a curt, "get off my page."
Another user, Destiny, requested the restoration of her sister's nearly three-year streak, which was lost due to a cruise vacation. "Could you please restore hers and make me the coolest sister in the world and we can start our friend streak again!?" she asked. Duolingo obliged, restoring the 1,032-day streak.
In another instance, a user claimed to have missed a lesson because they "ran out of toilet paper" while on the toilet, requesting the repair of a 67-day streak. The company responded by sharing a picture of Duolingo-branded toilet paper, implying a humorous, albeit unhelpful, solution.
Launched in 2012, Duolingo has become one of the world's largest language-learning platforms, offering hundreds of courses across numerous languages. The company is known for its often humorous and meme-centric presence on social media, frequently engaging with users in a lighthearted manner.
