Duolingo CEO Reverses Stance on AI Performance Metrics
Luis von Ahn explains why the language learning app will no longer primarily assess employee performance based on AI use.
Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn announced a shift in the company's approach to integrating artificial intelligence into its workforce, moving away from a previous plan to assess employee performance based on their use of AI tools. Initially, the company had considered AI usage as a significant factor in performance reviews, believing AI could substantially boost productivity.
"We're going to assess people's performance based on their use of AI," von Ahn stated in a memo last year. This was part of a broader internal push to implement AI across as many areas of the company as possible. However, this specific directive sparked external concerns that Duolingo might be planning layoffs. Von Ahn clarified that no employees were fired; in fact, the company hired more staff in the past year, attributing this to increased employee value in the age of AI.
"One employee with AI can just do way more than a single employee before AI," von Ahn explained. He expressed a desire to continue hiring, emphasizing that AI empowers individual employees to achieve more.
Despite the initial enthusiasm for AI integration, the company encountered unexpected internal feedback. Some employees argued that AI did not readily apply to their specific roles and questioned the mandate to use it without a clear business need. These concerns led to a reassessment of the policy.
"We've gone back to just, your performance is based on the impact you have on the company, regardless of what you do," von Ahn said, acknowledging that the initial approach was a misstep. The company has since reverted to evaluating employees based on their overall impact and contributions to Duolingo, irrespective of whether they utilize AI in their daily tasks.
