Disneyland is exploring a whimsical approach to managing its parking lots with the introduction of AI-powered assistant robots. These new assistants are designed to evoke characters from popular Pixar films like "Cars" and "Wall-E," according to a presentation at the Disney Accelerator Demo Day.
Prototypes of the robots were showcased in a video from the event, demonstrating how they might direct vehicles within the parking areas. Gary Daniels, SVP of products and experiences at Disney Experiences Technology & Digital, described the vision: "Imagine if characters from ‘Cars’ or robots from ‘Wall-E’ direct you where to park when you arrive." The company is collaborating with the robotics firm Field AI to develop this technology.
The initiative is part of Disney's broader effort to integrate innovative technologies into its parks. The company has previously filed patents for AI-powered characters that can interact with guests and has deployed robots like a free-roaming Olaf in Disneyland Paris and droids in Star Wars attractions.
These developments come as Disneyland is also undertaking a significant expansion of its parking facilities, with a new structure planned to add 6,000 spaces, along with improved shuttle and rideshare access. Construction on this expansion is anticipated to continue through 2029.
While Disney has not announced a timeline for the potential rollout of these AI parking assistants, the concept has generated some fan discussion, with concerns raised about the future role of human actors in park experiences. The company stated that the current work focuses on understanding how the robots function and how people respond to them.
