Dermatologists Tout Vaseline as a Skincare Powerhouse

Vaseline petroleum jelly, a product with over 150 years of history, continues to be a highly regarded skincare staple among dermatologists and consumers alike. Its enduring popularity stems from its effectiveness, affordability, and versatile applications, ranging from basic moisturizing to advanced skincare routines.

Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist and associate professor at Mount Sinai Hospital, describes Vaseline as "perhaps the best deal at the drugstore." He notes its utility for various body parts, including dry areas like elbows and knees, and its suitability for sensitive regions such as the eye area and cuticles. Dermatologist Uchenna Okereke emphasizes its value as an inexpensive and effective emollient, highlighting its occlusive properties that help lock in moisture, especially after bathing. The product is refined, safe, and hypoallergenic.

For many, Vaseline evokes early memories. Dermatologist DiAnne Davis recalls it being a constant presence in her household for moisturizing skin, while Caroline Robinson remembers her mother using it to protect her face from harsh Chicago winters. Okereke shared a childhood routine involving nightly application of Vaseline after baths, a practice common among many Black mothers.

The Rise of Slugging

The K-beauty trend known as "slugging," which involves applying a layer of Vaseline to the face as the final step in a nighttime skincare routine, aims to seal in other products and bolster the skin's moisture barrier. While popularized recently, this practice has long been a part of many skincare routines, particularly within the Black community. Dermatologist Angela Kim uses it as a final step to enhance the efficacy of serums and active ingredients, waking up to hydrated skin. Lupe Viayra, co-founder of Laruce Beauty, suggests warming Vaseline for use as a "topcoat" to protect both skin and other products.

However, Zeichner advises caution for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as Vaseline can feel heavy or sticky. He also recommends against applying it over potentially irritating ingredients like retinol or hydroxy acids.

Versatile Applications

Dermatologists recommend applying Vaseline to damp skin to maximize its moisture-sealing capabilities. Its uses are extensive: it can aid in healing minor cuts and scrapes, act as a spot treatment for dry patches, help treat diaper rash, prevent chafing, and soothe dry, cracked cuticles and heels. Nail artist Natalie Minerva finds it effective as an overnight treatment for dry hands, often worn with gloves.

For individuals prone to skin discoloration like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, applying Vaseline to minor wounds can promote better healing and reduce discoloration, according to Kim. The product is also a favorite for lip care, as lips lack oil glands and are prone to dryness.

Medical and Beauty Uses

In dermatology practices, Vaseline plays a crucial role in wound care. Robinson explains that contrary to the belief that open wounds heal better, keeping them hydrated with Vaseline can prevent scabbing and facilitate new skin cell migration. Kim notes its use in covering biopsy and surgical sites, with aftercare instructions often including continued Vaseline application.

While generally non-comedogenic and unlikely to clog pores, Kim advises individuals with very oily or acne-prone skin to consult a dermatologist before incorporating Vaseline into their routine. She also cautions against applying it to fresh sunburns, as it can trap heat.

Despite the emergence of many new skincare products, dermatologists like Okereke continue to recommend Vaseline daily, citing its consistent problem-free performance and low incidence of irritation or allergic reactions. Davis affirms its status as a top product favored by dermatologists globally. For many, like Minerva, Vaseline represents a reliable, nostalgic choice, proving that classic products often remain effective for a reason.
