Cooling Features Transform Summer Car Travel Amidst Rising Temperatures

As record-breaking temperatures continue to affect regions like the UK, with highs reaching 37.7 degrees Celsius in June and forecasts predicting more heatwaves, car manufacturers are integrating features designed to enhance comfort during hot weather. These innovations aim to make driving in extreme heat more bearable, moving beyond basic air conditioning.

Cabin Pre-Cooling

Many electric and hybrid vehicles now offer a cabin pre-cooling function as part of their pre-conditioning capabilities. Accessible via a smartphone application, this feature allows owners to lower the interior temperature before entering the vehicle. This is particularly beneficial for EV and hybrid owners, as it can utilize grid electricity while the car is plugged in, minimizing the impact on electric range. Even when not plugged in, the feature can be used without a significant drain on the battery.

Chilled Storage Compartments

Keeping drinks cool on the go has been a challenge, with concerns about chemicals leaching from plastic bottles and the risk of cans bursting in high temperatures. Some vehicles address this with integrated chilled storage compartments, often located in the central armrest. These compartments, found in models from brands like Jaecoo and Omoda, use cooling air vents to maintain low temperatures for small bottles and cans. While not capable of freezing, they provide a refreshing option for beverages during hot journeys.

Ventilated and Cooled Seats

Ventilated seats, first introduced by Saab in 1997, are becoming increasingly common. While the terms 'ventilated' and 'cooled' are often used interchangeably, they differ slightly. Ventilated seats circulate vehicle-temperature air through perforated coverings, whereas cooled seats blow refrigerated air, either from the car's air conditioning or a dedicated unit. Carmakers such as Tesla, Volkswagen, Kia, Hyundai, and Ford offer these features, which significantly improve comfort in high temperatures, especially when equipped across multiple seats.

12V Socket for Cooling Devices

The standard 12V socket found in most vehicles can be utilized to power portable cool boxes, ideal for picnics or keeping food fresh during heatwave travel. An extension lead can also allow rear passengers to access cool drinks powered by the socket, providing a useful alternative if the car lacks an integrated chilled compartment.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Capability

This technology, available in some EVs and plug-in hybrids, transforms the car into a portable power bank. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) enables the car's battery to power external electrical devices. This can include fans for cooling, portable air conditioning units, or even ice cube makers, making it a valuable feature for outdoor activities like camping during hot weather, enhancing comfort and safety. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) allows you to use your EV or plug-in hybrid car as a portable power bank. You can hook up everything from fans to keep cool to ice making machines
