Commodore Releases "Callback 8020" Flip Phone Focused on Limited Use

Commodore, a brand synonymous with early personal computing, has unveiled a new flip phone, the Callback 8020, designed to offer a more limited digital experience. This retro-inspired device aims to provide essential communication and utility features while deliberately excluding social media and web browsing to combat digital distractions.

The Callback 8020 features a design reminiscent of early 1990s flip phones, with a plastic shell, a folding form factor, and a simple outer display. Internally, it boasts a 3.25-inch display and a physical keypad, with T9 typing enabled by default for a more nostalgic user experience. Despite its vintage aesthetic, the phone is equipped with modern hardware, including 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage with microSD expansion, dual-SIM 4G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, hotspot capabilities, and GPS.

The device supports essential applications such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, Spotify, and Uber. However, all social media and browser applications are blocked at the system level, preventing users from accessing platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. The Callback 8020 runs on Sailfish OS, a Linux-based operating system developed by Jolla, which allows Commodore to enforce these restrictions and prevent the installation of unauthorized applications.

Commodore has equipped the Callback 8020 with a 48-megapixel Sony camera. For music enthusiasts, the phone includes a headphone jack with an "audiophile grade" digital-to-analog converter, support for lossless audio, and an FM radio receiver. The device also features a 'retro camcorder mode' that applies procedural filters to footage, giving photos and videos an old-school look.

In a nod to repairability and customization, the Callback 8020 will feature swappable batteries and cases. The phone is designed to be used minimally, with soft LED lights on the outer case indicating incoming messages rather than disruptive notifications. The company plans to expand the list of approved applications based on user requests, with a review process involving both AI and human assessment to ensure new apps align with the phone's core ethos.

The Callback 8020 is available in several color options, including ProtoPET White (£341.02), SX Silver (£340.27), and BASIC Beige (£340.27). A translucent 'Starlight' edition is priced at £378.91, and a gold 'Founders Edition' costs £530.48. Pre-orders are scheduled to open on June 30 with an early saving, and the first units are expected to ship in winter.
