A Chinese humanoid robot has set a new 100-meter sprint record, clocking in at 8.86 seconds at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Tuesday. This achievement surpasses the previous robot record of 9.39 seconds, which was set just three days prior.
The men's 100-meter world record, held by Usain Bolt, stands at 9.58 seconds. The record-breaking robot experienced a fall after crossing the finish line, colliding with a padded barrier and emitting sparks.
The World Humanoid Robot Games, in its second year, is an Olympic-style competition featuring over 2,000 robots in 51 events, including running, long jump, table tennis, and even ballroom dancing. Beyond athletic competitions, the robots also engage in team-based challenges simulating real-world scenarios such as household tasks, hotel services, and emergency response.
This event serves as a demonstration of China's rapid advancements in robotics, occurring amidst an intensifying technology rivalry with the United States. While robots designed for tasks like housekeeping and caregiving are still in the pilot and validation phases, China's official newspaper, People's Daily, noted that these challenges are a focus for development. The country's robotics industry is reportedly evolving towards higher quality and innovation.
