China's Moonshot AI Pursues $50 Billion Valuation Amidst Global AI Race
The Beijing-based firm, following the release of its large-scale Kimi K3 model, is reportedly seeking significant funding before a potential Hong Kong IPO.

Chinese artificial intelligence firm Moonshot AI is reportedly aiming for a $50 billion valuation as it seeks new funding, a move that follows the recent launch of its Kimi K3 model. This development has fueled discussions about China's advancements in the AI sector, potentially narrowing the gap with US-based industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic.
According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, the Beijing-based company intends to secure this latest round of funding before pursuing an initial public offering (IPO) on the Hong Kong stock exchange, which could occur later this year. Moonshot is reportedly on track to finalize a financing round at a $31.5 billion valuation that began earlier in the summer. Following this, the company plans to immediately seek additional capital at the higher $50 billion valuation in the lead-up to its IPO.
Founded in 2023 by AI researcher Yang Zhilin, who was trained at Carnegie Mellon, Moonshot garnered international attention with the introduction of Kimi K3. This large-language model was reportedly trained on 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the largest open-source model ever released. Yang, 33, previously held positions at Meta and Google.
Benchmark tests have indicated that Kimi K3 outperforms Anthropic's Opus 4.8 model and OpenAI's ChatGPT 5.5 on a majority of coding tasks. However, it is still considered less capable than Anthropic's most advanced model, Fable.
Earlier this week, Moonshot announced a temporary pause on new subscriptions for the Kimi K3 model, citing "unprecedented compute challenges." The company stated it would prioritize serving its existing paid customers during this period.
The increasing popularity of open-source Chinese AI models has raised concerns among US officials. These models are generally available for free download and are significantly less expensive than the closed-source offerings from major AI labs. This trend has intensified the competitive landscape between the US and China in the field of artificial intelligence.
In February, Anthropic publicly accused Moonshot of misappropriating its technology in a blog post. Anthropic currently holds a valuation of $965 billion and is also planning an IPO. Sam Altman's OpenAI, valued at $852 billion, has also announced IPO intentions, though some reports suggest its public debut could be postponed until 2027.
