Cameron Dallas Pivots to AI Music, Releasing Six Albums in Under Six Months
The former social media star, who previously saw his music career falter, is now leveraging artificial intelligence to produce and license music through his new agency.
Cameron Dallas, once a prominent figure in the early days of social media influencing, is making a renewed push into the music industry, this time with a significant reliance on artificial intelligence. Dallas, who initially signed with Columbia Records in 2018 with aspirations of becoming a pop star, has released six albums already this year, a prolific output that rivals historical recording artists.
Dallas first gained widespread attention posting comedy sketches and prank videos on the now-defunct platform Vine in 2012. His online popularity grew to include over 25 million Instagram followers, 17 million on TikTok, and five million YouTube subscribers. His fame led to a Netflix reality series, "Chasing Cameron," and world tours.
Despite the initial hype, Dallas's music career with Columbia Records did not meet expectations. His 2018 single "Why Haven’t I Met You?" failed to chart within the Top 100, and his 2020 follow-up, "Helpless," saw similar results. The record label eventually parted ways with the influencer.
Now, Dallas appears to have shifted his strategy. He is also building Dallas Global Agency, a business focused on AI-generated content. The agency helps creators license their likeness, including their face and voice, for AI to create content. Dallas's recent musical output is being released through the agency's music arm, DGA Records.
Dallas has been vocal about his new philosophy, advocating at the tech convention VidCon in June that the primary revenue stream for creators is moving from content creation to licensing their digital identity for AI use. He stated that this model allows for consistent revenue as AI generates content based on their licensed attributes.
However, the success of his AI-generated music is not yet clear. One music video for his latest single has garnered only around 1,500 YouTube views. His promotional efforts on TikTok and Instagram, including an underwater singing challenge, have elicited mixed reactions from followers, with some questioning the shift from his earlier comedic content.
In related developments, TikTok has introduced a new AI detection system to combat spam and misinformation generated by artificial intelligence on its platform. The company has invested millions in promoting responsible AI use among its creators. Separately, a report indicated that Stockton Council spent nearly £2,000 of taxpayer money on social media influencers to promote local events without providing evidence of measurable success or return on investment.
