Apple Unveils New Mac Mini with M6 Chip and M5 Ultra Mac Studio

Apple has announced the launch of its latest Mac hardware, featuring the new M6 chip for the Mac mini and the M5 Ultra for the Mac Studio. Both models are currently available for preorder, with availability for consumers beginning September 22.

The M6 chip, designed for everyday users, incorporates a new 12-core CPU complex. According to Apple's press release, this configuration includes two more cores than the M5 chip, consisting of two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. This architecture aims to enhance energy efficiency and productivity, making the Mac mini suitable for more demanding tasks such as photo editing and intensive multitasking. Apple states that the M6 offers up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded CPU performance compared to the M5, alongside what it claims to be the world's fastest single-threaded performance.

For users requiring significant computing power, Apple has introduced the M5 Ultra chip. This processor is built with a quad-die architecture, enabling it to function as a single, powerful processor. This design is intended to provide enhanced performance for demanding applications like video editing, 3D rendering, and complex AI workloads. Compared to the M3 Ultra, the M5 Ultra is reportedly 25% faster in single-CPU-thread tasks and up to 30% faster in multi-core operations. Apple suggests this chip is well-suited for running large AI models directly on a Mac, a capability beneficial for creative professionals and those working with advanced computing tasks.

The Mac mini equipped with the M6 chip is positioned as a practical upgrade for general users, offering improved speed, efficiency, and AI capabilities. The M5 Ultra, on the other hand, is geared towards users with specialized technical or creative professions. Preorders for both the Mac mini and Mac Studio are now open, with shipments scheduled to begin on September 22.
