Apple Acknowledges iPhone Duo Screen Cracking Issues Post-Launch

Apple has confirmed that some units of its newly launched foldable iPhone Duo are experiencing cracked screens shortly after customers began receiving them. The device, which started at $1,999, made its debut on October 23rd, but complaints of cracks appearing on the folding display emerged within hours.

Multiple iPhone Duo owners have reported that the inner display developed cracks, often accompanied by a bright line of damaged pixels extending from the fold. Some users described the failures occurring after only a few uses or even before completing the initial setup. One Reddit user, u/Midnight_Slump, reported a failure within six hours of receiving their device and was able to obtain a replacement from Apple.

In response to the growing number of reports, Apple acknowledged the issue on October 26th. A company statement indicated awareness of a problem affecting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. Apple is instructing affected customers to contact AppleCare for replacements. The company has not yet specified the total number of devices impacted or the root cause of the screen failures.

Potential Cause of Screen Failures

Repair experts at iFixit have examined the iPhone Duo's internal structure. Their analysis, including CT scans of the hinge mechanism, suggests a potential issue with a support bar within the hinge. According to their theory, this bar may not retract sufficiently when the phone is folded, potentially putting pressure on the display and leading to cracks. iFixit has not definitively confirmed this as the cause, and Apple has not provided an explanation.

Repair Costs and Customer Guidance

Replacing the inner display of the iPhone Duo is a complex and costly repair. iFixit reported that an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair could cost as much as $999, approximately half the phone's starting price. However, Apple has stated that customers experiencing the acknowledged display defect do not need an AppleCare+ subscription to receive a replacement. It remains unclear if accidental damage or other screen issues would be covered under the same terms.

Apple advises customers who experience screen cracks or unusual resistance or sounds from the hinge to document the damage with photos and receipts. They recommend contacting AppleCare directly via the Apple Support website or an Apple Store. Customers are also advised to back up their data before exchanging the device, if possible.

Early Adopter Experiences and Market Context

Beyond the screen issues, some early adopters have expressed broader dissatisfaction with the iPhone Duo. One user, transitioning from a Samsung foldable device, found the iPhone Duo's interface buggy and cumbersome, missed features like Face ID, and was underwhelmed by the camera performance and display quality. This user ultimately returned the device.

While Apple's response of offering replacements is seen as appropriate, the underlying cause of the screen failures and the long-term reliability of the device remain subjects of attention for consumers and industry analysts alike.
