Anthropic to Double New York City Workforce, Leases Manhattan Office Building

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has leased a full office building in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighborhood, a move that is expected to double its local workforce by the end of the year. The expansion marks an increasing trend of major AI firms establishing a strong presence in New York City.

Anthropic will occupy all 16 floors at 330 Hudson Street. The company stated its intention to increase its New York City employee count to over 1,000 by the close of 2026, a substantial rise from its current number of fewer than 500 employees at the start of the year. The company plans to begin moving into the new space later this summer. The facility offers capacity for approximately 1,700 desks.

Prior to this expansion, New York City was already Anthropic’s second-largest operational hub, following its headquarters in San Francisco. Paul Smith, Anthropic’s chief commercial officer, highlighted New York's importance as a center for AI application. "New York is one of the main hubs for how AI is being put to work, and Anthropic is in the middle of it as a technology partner to the financial institutions, media companies, and cultural organizations that help define the city," Smith said in a statement. He added that doubling the team and deepening the company's commitment to the city will enable closer collaboration with those driving AI advancements.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul welcomed Anthropic's expansion, emphasizing the city's appeal to businesses. She noted that New York City's talent pool, industry diversity, and proximity to academic and research institutions make it a prime location for companies. "[This] demonstrates that New York City — with its unparalleled talent pool, vast industry diversity, and close proximity to the world’s largest academic and research institutions — remains the premier place for companies to do business," Hochul stated.

This expansion follows a period of significant developments for Anthropic and its CEO Dario Amodei. The company recently resumed operations of its Mythos and Fable AI models after securing approval from the Trump administration. These models had been subject to export controls after concerns were raised by executives, including Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Anthropic engaged in negotiations with Trump administration officials to reinstate the models with implemented safeguards.

Anthropic's growth in New York is occurring amidst similar moves by its competitor, OpenAI. OpenAI has also secured a significant office space in SoHo, leasing 90,000 square feet at the Puck Building. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has previously spoken about AI's potential to boost New York's economy, particularly during discussions with local business leaders. In June 2025, OpenAI released a report suggesting that New York City could become a global leader in the "Intelligence Age," with AI contributing significantly to revenue, jobs, and economic growth. The report projected that a 1% annual increase in US economic growth, compounded over a decade, could result in nearly $3 trillion in additional wealth, exceeding the annual GDP of New York State.
