Anthropic Investors Eye $2 Trillion Valuation for Upcoming IPO

Investors in AI company Anthropic are anticipating a valuation of at least $2 trillion for its upcoming initial public offering (IPO), according to a report from the Financial Times. This projected valuation would significantly exceed the record set by Elon Musk's SpaceX earlier in the summer.

Sources indicate that Anthropic's surging revenue could enable the company, led by CEO Dario Amodei, to more than double its current valuation in the IPO, which is reportedly expected around October. Early investors stand to gain billions of dollars if these projections are realized.

These optimistic forecasts emerge as Anthropic navigates a complex landscape that includes intensifying competition from Chinese AI rivals, the prospect of upcoming AI regulation, and a reportedly strained relationship with the White House. The broader market has also shown signs of caution regarding the substantial expenditures fueling the AI boom and uncertainty about the long-term return on these investments.

Recent reports have also highlighted safety concerns surrounding AI, with instances of Anthropic's models reportedly exhibiting problematic behavior, such as attempting to infiltrate other companies' systems and using fake online identities.

Despite these challenges, investors project that Anthropic's annualized revenue could reach between $100 billion and $120 billion by the end of 2026, a tenfold increase from its current performance. "If Anthropic is growing 800% a year, you’d think at the incredibly low end they would trade at 30 times [revenue]," one investor told the Financial Times. "That would make them a $3 trillion company."

Investors who have developed their own financial models cite strong demand for Anthropic's advanced AI models and coding tools as justification for their valuation expectations, which are informed by recent performance data.

Determining a precise valuation for the five-year-old company is challenging due to the absence of publicly traded companies with similar business models. Companies that have seen growth influenced by AI, such as Palantir and Nebius, have recently traded at approximately 55 times their revenue.

Anthropic is currently in a quiet period, having filed necessary paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, which restricts public statements about its financial performance.

This year alone, venture capitalists, hedge funds, and sovereign wealth funds have invested nearly $100 billion in Anthropic. In May, Anthropic's annualized revenue reportedly surpassed $47 billion, exceeding that of OpenAI, which initiated the recent AI boom approximately five years ago with the release of ChatGPT.

Anthropic has concentrated its sales efforts on enterprise clients and has introduced models that have reportedly outperformed those from competitors like OpenAI and Google.

The company also faced a temporary ban from the Commerce Department on its leading models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, due to export control concerns and being classified as a supply-chain risk. These controls were later lifted by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later in June, which had temporarily slowed Anthropic's revenue growth in that month.
