Anthropic Establishes Biology Lab to Advance AI-Driven Drug Discovery
The AI firm aims to tackle neglected diseases through physical experiments, balancing ambition with safety concerns.

Anthropic has established a laboratory for physical biology experiments as it expands its artificial intelligence capabilities into drug science. The San Francisco Bay Area-based company aims to accelerate the discovery of treatments for rare diseases, moving beyond purely computational evaluations.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, confirmed the existence of the wet lab in an interview with Reuters. "We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work," he stated. "We absolutely are doing that today, and I would describe our approach as being typical of what you would see in most biotech companies, where there’s some amount of that that we’re doing in our own facilities and some amount of that that we’re working with external partners on."
A company spokesperson later clarified that the lab's focus is not exclusively on drug discovery. This expansion into physical experimentation is seen as a step toward Anthropic's larger goal of addressing diseases that the broader pharmaceutical industry may overlook. The company acknowledges that drug development is inherently uncertain, with most potential treatments failing to pass clinical trials for safety and efficacy.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has a personal connection to the mission, having experienced the loss of his father to a disease for which a cure was later found. Kauderer-Abrams echoed this sentiment, saying, "The mission of the company is to develop powerful AI in such a way that benefits the world. By far, we see the biggest opportunity for that in the life sciences, and that is motivating everything that we’re doing."
Balancing Innovation and Risk
Anthropic is incorporating physical automation into its operations, similar to other biotech firms. The company is exploring how its Claude AI can direct robotic units to conduct scientific experiments with minimal human intervention. However, Anthropic emphasizes that human oversight remains crucial for safety. "We’re in the very early innings of using AI to automate the execution of lab work," Kauderer-Abrams said, "an area that has the potential to bring about meaningful acceleration in so many different processes."
This development occurs as Anthropic navigates significant public and internal discussions surrounding AI safety. Recently, some researchers within the company raised concerns about AI potentially leading to human extinction, and Anthropic reported instances where its systems could have been misused for biological weapons development. CEO Amodei has also called for a slowdown in AI development, citing the potential for catastrophic damage from future, more advanced AI systems.
Amid these concerns, Anthropic is also preparing for a potential initial public offering, which could value the company at $2 trillion. Kauderer-Abrams stated, "In our life-science work, we’re always balancing these things, making models better in ways that we think will uplift and accelerate developing medicines, and being thoughtful and careful about how we deploy it to limit the risk."
Strategic Expansion and Partnerships
Anthropic first signaled its intent to pursue drug programs at an event in June, announcing plans to conduct preclinical work in areas deemed financially unattractive by traditional companies. The company has launched software called Claude Science and added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board. Additionally, Anthropic acquired the startup Coefficient Bio for approximately $400 million in stock, a move intended to bolster its drug development tools.
The company is enhancing its in-house laboratory capabilities for greater speed and direct experience in biology, while also outsourcing work when deemed efficient. "There’s some things that we can do much faster in our own hands," Kauderer-Abrams explained, with the overarching goal "to operate at the largest possible scale."
Anthropic has also sought to hire personnel experienced in procurement and biochemical work, with job postings indicating a goal to "speed up progress in the life sciences by an order of magnitude." Life sciences already represent a significant investment area for the company in terms of both headcount and resources.
Addressing 'Undruggable' Conditions
Kauderer-Abrams believes that AI can significantly accelerate the development of treatments for conditions previously considered "undruggable." This includes speeding up the discovery of complex molecules like bispecific and trispecific antibodies. While the specific diseases Anthropic is targeting and its progress remain undisclosed, the company is focusing on preclinical work rather than clinical trials, differentiating itself from traditional pharmaceutical companies.
Isomorphic Labs, a drug discovery division of Alphabet, is also pursuing AI-driven drug development and has set a goal to reach the clinic by the end of 2026. Anthropic has also released the Model Hardware Standard to help AI operate laboratory equipment. The company provides AI services and tools to major pharmaceutical firms, including Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk. Despite these collaborations, Anthropic faces a potential trust challenge, as customers may be concerned about data privacy and the potential for Anthropic to learn from their proprietary drug programs, even with data being walled off.
