AI Transforms Hollywood: Scorsese Embraces Tech Amidst Industry Job Losses

The film industry is experiencing a significant shift with the increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence, a trend highlighted by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese's recent use of AI for storyboarding. This technological integration signals a potentially irreversible change for Hollywood.

While the industry celebrates box office successes, employment figures in the film and sound recording sectors have shown a decline. Reports indicate that the sector shed 3,600 jobs recently, contributing to a larger trend of entertainment job losses in the Los Angeles area over the past few years. This job crisis has become a notable issue in local politics, influencing gubernatorial and mayoral debates as candidates propose incentives to retain productions within California.

AI offers Hollywood a path to maintain profitability during economic uncertainty, but it simultaneously raises concerns about the livelihoods of many industry artisans. Ironically, some artists currently employed in the industry are involved in training AI systems, which could eventually lead to their own roles being automated.

Despite vocal opposition from some prominent figures, such as Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro, others are following Scorsese's lead. Ben Affleck, for instance, sold his AI film production company, InterPositive, to Netflix, though he remains as a senior advisor.

The landscape of acting is also evolving with the emergence of AI-generated performers. "Tilly Norwood" is presented as a prominent AI actress, designed to remain perpetually young and appealing. She is set to star in her first feature film, "Misaligned," which explores the journey of an AI creation becoming more human. Similarly, the late actor Val Kilmer is being digitally revived for the upcoming film "As Deep as the Grave," with the approval of his estate. This opens the possibility of resurrecting other iconic deceased actors through AI technology.

Beyond virtual performances, AI is also being used to enhance visual effects, allowing studios to compete with larger competitors. Angel Studios and Wonder Project employed AI to bolster the visuals in their film "Young Washington," which achieved a notable opening weekend box office performance, prompting discussions about a sequel.

The animation sector is also poised for transformation by AI, with some reports suggesting a potential for up to 90% job displacement. Even emerging animators can now leverage AI software to create sophisticated animated content independently, as demonstrated by Josh Daws' satirical short video "The Continuing Adventures of Mary Sue," which gained significant traction online without studio backing.

This democratization of content creation, enabled by AI, could expand the diversity of stories being told. Furthermore, factors beyond technological advancements, such as California's high cost of living, social issues, and political climate, may also be contributing to the decline in entertainment employment in the region.
