AI-Powered 'Mixtape' Tech Aims to Unite Surfers of All Skill Levels in Wave Pools

A new artificial intelligence system called "The Mixtape" is set to revolutionize the wave pool experience by enabling surfers of varying skill levels to ride together. Developed through a two-year collaboration between wave pool companies Endless Surf and Flowstate, the technology customizes waves based on the skill level of each rider.

Using AI-powered computer vision, the system identifies individual surfers in the lineup. This data is then fed into software that delivers a personalized wave experience for each person. The goal is to create a more inclusive and family-friendly environment in surf parks, which are traditionally organized around specific ability levels.

"The Mixtape brings together the two most advanced technologies in their respective fields to make an already unique Endless Surf experience even more personalized," said Paul Chutter, president of Endless Surf. "Surfers can share long rides with their friends and family while each getting the wave they want, and operators gain an entirely new session product they can offer their guests."

Luke Wallace, CEO of Flowstate, highlighted how the technology addresses a common challenge for surfers. "Surfing with friends or family usually means everyone needs to want the same type of wave, or you end up surfing separate sessions," Wallace said. "The Mixtape changes that."

Beyond wave customization, the collaboration also incorporates multi-angle surfing capture and AI-powered coaching. Both companies plan to continue their partnership on future product developments.

This innovation comes as surf parks gain popularity, with facilities like DSRT Surf in Palm Desert preparing to open in late summer 2026. DSRT Surf will feature North America's largest surf lagoon, powered by Wavegarden's system, which is designed to produce up to 1,000 consistent, ocean-like waves per hour for all skill levels.
