AI Lab Anthropic Pledges 5% of Stock to Public Benefit Fund
The AI company, established as a public benefit corporation, is expanding its commitment to social impact ahead of a potential IPO.
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced Sunday it is dedicating 5% of its shares to a newly established Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The value of this fund is expected to grow alongside the company's share value. This move is part of Anthropic's ongoing commitment to its designation as a public benefit corporation, which aims to balance financial objectives with societal impact.
The fund will provide Anthropic with "increased flexibility and scale, enabling us to pursue our mission in new ways," the company stated in a blog post. Potential uses for the fund include significant donations to traditional non-profits or direct distributions to specific populations. As an example, Anthropic cited its ongoing study of artificial intelligence's labor market impacts, for which it has already committed $200 million. The company suggested that "bolder approaches may be needed" given the rapid advancement of AI.
Anthropic's co-founders, including CEO Dario Amodei, established the company with a pledge to donate 80% of their personal wealth. The company also operates an equity donation match program where employees can pledge their equity, which Anthropic then matches. Approximately half of Anthropic's employees participate in this program.
Combined with previous commitments and the new fund, Anthropic indicated that roughly 20% of its shares will be allocated for public good. This figure could increase further if the company achieves specific valuation milestones.
The announcement comes as Anthropic is reportedly planning a significant initial public offering, potentially as soon as November.
