AI Firm Offers Free Cleaning Services in NYC to Gather Robot Training Data

An artificial intelligence firm is providing free apartment cleaning services in New York City as a novel method to collect data for training its next generation of autonomous robots. The initiative, known as Shift, is being conducted by AI company Micro AGI.

Data Collection Through Domestic Tasks

The program involves sending teams of cleaners, equipped with cameras, to residents' homes. These cleaners are instructed to focus on tasks requiring fine motor skills, such as washing dishes, in order to capture detailed hand movements. The data gathered is intended to train robots to perform domestic chores and eventually provide personal care services.

Cleaners participating in the Shift program are reportedly college graduates who have experience in the startup world. Due to high demand, the teams are stationed in New York, cleaning approximately five apartments daily, five days a week. A key feature of the service is that the cleaners wear caps with cameras, which transmit footage to their mobile phones, allowing for continuous recording of their actions.

Micro AGI's goal is to develop robots capable of complex dexterity, mirroring human-like abilities in tasks ranging from household chores to personal caregiving. The company hopes that by observing and documenting human execution of these tasks, they can engineer robots that can replicate the same functions autonomously.

While the service is offered free of charge, the underlying objective is the acquisition of comprehensive data to advance robot capabilities in real-world domestic environments. This approach underscores a growing trend in AI development, where human activity is meticulously recorded to inform the creation of sophisticated artificial intelligence and robotics.
