AI Chatbot Rekindles Intimacy for Long-Term Couple
A New York couple found renewed connection and exploration through an AI-powered intimacy app after their sex life waned due to the pressures of daily life.
For Juniper and Jeff, a New York couple married for 25 years, the routine demands of work and raising children had significantly diminished their intimate life. Like many couples, they experienced a decline in frequency and variety in their sexual encounters, with intimacy often reduced to once or twice a month.
"We both work two jobs. We have school-age kids and aging parents. We are exhausted," Juniper, 43, told The Post. "It was hard to find energy for intimacy."
Seeking to reconnect and revitalize their relationship, the couple turned to Arya, a subscription-based AI chatbot designed to assist users in amplifying intimacy. After completing a detailed profile questionnaire about their desires and relationship dynamics, the app assigned them an "Erotic Persona." Both Juniper and Jeff were identified as "Adventurers," a persona characterized by a craving for novelty and exploration.
Based on their profiles, Arya's AI concierge curated "Scenes" for the couple. These scenes include playlists, mood-setting suggestions, and written guides, often accompanied by short videos and audio erotica designed to build anticipation. Juniper noted that these elements served as effective conversation starters, prompting them to explore new experiences together.
"One of us will text the other, ‘Hey, did you see this?’ It’s easy and fun and exciting to send a link and say, ”I’m really excited to try this. You in?” Juniper said.
Arya also discreetly delivers monthly subscription boxes containing items such as sex toys and massage oils, intended to complement the app's guidance and facilitate exploration. The couple found that the app's suggestions aligned with their curiosities, leading them to experiences they might not have considered otherwise.
Nicholas Velotta, a sexologist and head of relationship science at Arya, explained that the app's chatbot can handle straightforward questions but is programmed to flag when human intervention is needed. While Juniper and Jeff don't use the chatbot during intimate moments, they do use their phones for guidance, reading through scene chapters together.
"We will get in bed, light a candle, and share one phone, reading through the Scene ‘chapters’ together. Sometimes we don’t get very far because we’re eager to unwrap a new toy and try it out," Juniper shared.
The couple reports a significant increase in their intimacy, now engaging sexually two to three times per week, with one notable week where they were intimate daily. They credit Arya with helping them discover shared interests, including a mutual curiosity for exploring BDSM dynamics, specifically dominant and submissive roles.
"I had no idea she was interested in that, and all of a sudden we’re like, oh, look at us, look what we’re into," Jeff said. "In the last year, we have had experiences in the bedroom that I did not know were possible," added Juniper.
Velotta highlighted that a lack of direct communication about sex is a common barrier for couples. He stated that it is not uncommon for couples to need resources to navigate these conversations and bridge the gap between arousal and action.
For Juniper and Jeff, the AI-guided exploration has not only enhanced their sexual relationship but also improved their overall communication. Jeff noted that the communication required for exploring BDSM has extended to better discourse within their relationship.
"It’s really expanded our repertoire and our appreciation for each other," Jeff said. Juniper added that the app has allowed her to embrace and celebrate her sexual desires more openly, something she found challenging before.
"I’m embracing and owning and celebrating what I want and what I like sexually in a way that I never have before," she said.
