Adventure Time: Side Quests Brings Lighthearted Fun to a New Generation on Hulu
The new animated series offers standalone, family-friendly adventures for existing fans and newcomers alike.
Hulu and Disney+ are expanding their animated offerings with "Adventure Time: Side Quests," a new companion series to the acclaimed 2010-2018 show. Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, this sci-fi adventure comedy follows a young Finn the Human, voiced by Sasha Knight, and his magical dog best friend, Jake the Dog, voiced by John DiMaggio. The series aims for a lighter tone and simpler subject matter than its predecessor, making it more suitable for younger audiences while still offering enjoyment for adults.
The show features 20 standalone episodes, each presenting Finn and Jake with unique challenges and journeys in the familiar Land of Ooo. Returning characters such as the Ice King (Tom Kenny), Marceline (Olivia Olson), and BMO (Niki Yang) also make appearances.
First Episode Adventures
The premiere episode, "Bros and Arrows," introduces Finn's aspiration to compete in the T’Ooournament of Champions. His initial attempt to enter the House Throwing Competition is met with ridicule, particularly from Choose Goose (Jeff Bennett), whose comments about Finn's "noodle arms" draw laughter, even from Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch), whom Finn has a crush on. Embarrassed, Finn tries to prove his strength by moving a stone tower, but accidentally dislodges it. A hooded figure intervenes, saving the tower and its occupants. This act inspires Finn to abandon the House Throwing Competition and enter the Crossbow Tournament, hoping to emulate the mysterious marksman. The figure is revealed to be Boyish Boy (Aziah Pesaleli), the son of Mannish Man, a muscular minotaur. However, Boyish Boy proves to be an arrogant rival rather than an altruistic hero, mocking Finn and aiming to defeat him. With Jake by his side, Finn is given a chance to compete despite his inexperience.
A Youth-Friendly Approach
"Adventure Time: Side Quests" is noted for its vibrant animation, playful storylines, and overall lighthearted tone. The 11-minute episode runtime is particularly geared towards younger viewers. While the original "Adventure Time" series could delve into complex and thought-provoking themes, this new iteration maintains a more innocent and accessible narrative. The show has been compared to other family-friendly animated series such as "Chowder," "Phineas and Ferb," and "Steven Universe."
John DiMaggio's return as Jake the Dog is highlighted as a significant performance, with Jake serving as a supportive companion and a source of humor and charm. The series is described as wholesome, with minimal mature content. For instance, Finn is briefly shirtless while demonstrating his "noodle arms," but the portrayal is innocent.
The review suggests that while "Adventure Time: Side Quests" may be a skip for adults without a connection to the original series, it is a worthwhile watch for children, families, and long-time "Adventure Time" fans seeking a brief and cheerful viewing experience. The series is available on Hulu, with subscription options starting at $10.99 per month for the ad-supported plan, and $18.99 per month for the ad-free version. Disney+ bundles that include Hulu are also available.
