Zverev to Become World Number One, Ending Sinner and Alcaraz Dominance

Alexander Zverev is set to become the men's world number one, unseating Jannik Sinner, after reaching the quarter-finals of the Vienna tournament. The German player secured his ascent to the top of the ATP rankings with a victory over Tallon Griekspoor in the Erste Bank Open. This achievement marks a significant moment, making Zverev the second German, after Boris Becker in 1991, to hold the top spot in men's singles tennis.

Zverev's current season has been marked by strong performances, including winning two Grand Slam titles and accumulating 64 victories in 80 matches. Reflecting on his journey, Zverev noted, "It's been a wait but sometimes you have to wait for the best things in life." At 29 years old, he becomes the second-oldest man to reach the world number one ranking for the first time. "I'm super happy, super thrilled - I have no words for this year," he added.

The beginning of the year saw expectations centered on Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz maintaining their dominance. However, injuries to both players created an opening for Zverev. He capitalized on these absences to secure victories in the French Open and the US Open. Prior to Zverev's rise, Alcaraz led the rankings with 12,050 points, followed closely by Sinner with 11,500 points at the start of the season. The gap between the top two and the rest of the field was substantial, with third-ranked Zverev holding 5,110 points.

Both of Zverev's Grand Slam titles were won without facing Sinner or Alcaraz, and he did not compete against a top-10 player until the final of the US Open against Ben Shelton. As the season progressed, Zverev secured the year-end number one ranking after Alcaraz's loss in Shanghai on October 12. Zverev confirmed his ranking on November 2, becoming the first player other than Sinner and Alcaraz to hold the top spot since Novak Djokovic in June 2024.

Zverev acknowledged that he might not be the undisputed best player if his rivals were consistently healthy and performing at their peak. Nevertheless, he has maximized his opportunities, delivering the most successful season of his career, which had previously fallen short of the high expectations set since his emergence as a teenage prodigy.

Meanwhile, British player Arthur Fery continued his impressive run by defeating Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in Vienna. This victory avenges a previous loss to Musetti at the US Open and represents Fery's biggest win by ranking on the ATP Tour. Fery will face Zverev in the quarter-finals, a rematch of their Wimbledon semi-final.

In other notable matches, Daniil Medvedev narrowly defeated Cameron Norrie 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) in a tight contest where Norrie held a match point. Carlos Alcaraz also advanced, winning against Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-1, 7-6 (13-11).
