Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski vetoed a trade to the Dallas Stars on Wednesday, despite a verbal agreement between the two NHL franchises. Werenski, who won the Norris Trophy last season, possesses a full no-move clause in his contract, allowing him to reject any trade.
The proposed transaction, which could not be finalized until July 1 due to contractual or cap constraints, reportedly had defenseman Thomas Harley as the central piece of the return for Columbus. Sources suggest Werenski's decision indicates a preference to remain in the Eastern Conference, potentially signaling a cooling relationship with the Blue Jackets.
Earlier reports indicated Werenski's interest in joining the Tampa Bay Lightning, though Columbus would require a substantial return package. The Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers have also reportedly shown interest in acquiring the defenseman. Trade rumors surrounding Werenski have circulated recently, with the Blue Jackets reportedly fielding calls for him last week.
Werenski is currently in the second season of a six-year, $57.5 million contract signed in 2021, carrying a cap hit of $9.6 million for the next two seasons. He is coming off a career-best performance, recording 22 goals and 59 assists in 75 games, which earned him the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman. In 642 career games, all with the Blue Jackets, he has amassed 135 goals and 330 assists. Werenski was drafted eighth overall by Columbus in the 2015 NHL Draft, playing one additional season with the University of Michigan before joining the NHL. His playoff success with the team has not extended beyond the second round.
