Yankees Shut Out by Rays in Game 1 of ALDS
A single home run was the difference as the Yankees' offense struggled against Drew Rasmussen.
The New York Yankees opened their American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 1-0 loss in Game 1, held Saturday in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Yankees' offense was largely stifled, managing only one hit throughout the contest.
Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen, who had been a challenge for the Yankees throughout the season, carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He finished his outing having dominated a potent lineup, allowing just one baserunner until that point.
The lone hit for the Yankees came from catcher Austin Wells in the eighth inning, breaking up Rasmussen's no-hit bid. However, Wells was subsequently thrown out at third base attempting to stretch the hit into a triple, ending the Yankees' most promising threat.
The game's only run was scored in the third inning by the Rays' Jonathan Aranda, who hit a solo home run to deep right-center field off Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole. Despite the limited scoring, Rays relievers maintained the shutout through the remainder of the game.
Beyond Aranda's decisive home run, the Rays' offense produced little against Cole and the Yankees' bullpen. The Yankees' inability to generate runs marked a significant departure from their recent offensive performance, having collected 26 hits in their previous two games against the Boston Red Sox.
