New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been placed on the injured list due to a thumb sprain, manager Aaron Boone announced Wednesday.
Chisholm sustained the injury Tuesday night when he jammed his thumb while sliding into second base. The timing is difficult for both Chisholm and the Yankees, as it follows the highly anticipated return of outfielder Aaron Judge from the injured list just the previous day.
In the final month of what has been a largely inconsistent season, Chisholm had recently found a rhythm, batting .295 with a .832 OPS and 10 stolen bases over his last 29 games. His recent performance included a stretch of five home runs in five games, leading some teammates to draw comparisons to Barry Bonds.
No immediate replacement for Chisholm at second base had been decided as of Boone's pregame press conference. However, Boone indicated he would be comfortable with Anthony Volpe, who has been expanding his defensive versatility, playing the position at the major league level. Volpe has been performing well at the plate, hitting .333 with eight home runs and a 1.218 OPS over his last 17 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Jose Caballero and Amed Rosario are also potential options for a rotation at second base.
