The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-2 on Wednesday night, powered by three home runs, including two from Paul Goldschmidt. The win secured the series victory for the Yankees over the Tigers at Comerica Park.
Tarik Skubal, making his third start since returning from the injured list, pitched effectively for stretches but surrendered three home runs, a feat no other team had accomplished against him since 2021. Goldschmidt led off the game with a solo home run and later added another. In the sixth inning, Jasson Domínguez broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run shot off Skubal, marking his first right-handed homer of the season.
Ryan Weathers, a lefty for the Yankees, outdueled Skubal, allowing just two runs (one earned) over six innings to earn the win. The Yankees' bullpen, with contributions from Camilo Doval, Fernando Cruz, and David Bednar, closed out the game with three scoreless innings of relief. Bednar recorded his 11th consecutive scoreless appearance.
Skubal, considered a potential trade chip this summer, struck out seven of the nine batters he faced entering the sixth inning. Despite his dominance, the Yankees managed only four hits in six innings, but three left the park. Domínguez's go-ahead homer came after striking out in his previous two at-bats against Skubal, eventually connecting on a change-up.
In the prior inning, Max Schuemann made several key plays in center field to preserve the 2-2 tie. After Kevin McGonigle doubled, Schuemann's strong defensive efforts included a nearly successful grab on the ricochet, throwing out McGonigle at third, followed by a diving catch in left-center and another sliding grab in right-center.
The Yankees are scheduled to fly to Boston for a four-game series against the Red Sox following this victory.
