The New York Yankees suffered a 9-7 defeat to the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, marred by a rare late-game collapse fueled by an uncharacteristic outing from reliever Brent Headrick. The Yankees saw leads evaporate three separate times before Headrick allowed three runs in the eighth inning to seal the loss.
The Astros, fighting for a playoff spot in a competitive American League, scored in six of the nine innings. They erased Yankees advantages of 3-2, 5-3, and 6-5, demonstrating a persistent offensive effort.
Headrick, who had been a reliable presence in the Yankees' bullpen, entered the eighth inning with his team leading 6-5. However, Yainer Diaz tied the game with a home run, and subsequent singles from Jeremy Peña and Isaac Paredes gave the Astros an 8-6 lead. The Yankees managed to pull within one run in the bottom of the eighth, but their rally stalled, and the Astros added an insurance run in the ninth.
Earlier in the game, Luis García Jr. provided offensive sparks for the Yankees. He hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to put the Yankees ahead 5-3 and later delivered an RBI double in the seventh to give them a 6-5 lead. However, neither advantage held.
Relief pitcher Fernando Cruz struggled to maintain leads, allowing a game-tying two-run home run to Peña in the sixth inning that made it 5-5. Cruz has given up runs in eight of his last 16 appearances, with four of his seven home runs allowed this season coming in August.
Starter Will Warren pitched five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and numerous base runners. Despite a rocky performance, his efforts were overshadowed by the bullpen's struggles. The Yankees' offense, which had been productive with Cody Bellinger's three-run homer in the third and García's contributions, was ultimately not enough to overcome the pitching staff's collective off night. The loss prevented the Yankees from gaining ground on the division-leading Rays and allowed the Red Sox to move within 1 ½ games of them in the standings.
